Daniel McGinnis, John Smith, and Anthony Vaughan
In the summer of 1795 a teenager by the
name of Daniel McGinnis discovered something that would be one of Canada’s
greatest known mysteries.
Daniel noticed
strange lights near the island and decided he would go and see what was
happening. When he got to the spot where he assumed he witnessed the lights, he
noticed a depression in the earth. As a curious teen, Daniel decided to go and
grab a couple buddies to start and excavate this mysterious
site.
The next day Daniel
and his friends (John Smith and Anthony Vaughan) set out to find what had been
buried there. What they didn’t know was that it was only a couple hundred feet
down (is what they say). They started to dig and dig and dig until they got to
10 feet when they hit a wooden platform embedded into the walls of the
hole. They started to tear out the wood and noticed that there was at least a
foot of space between the wood and the next patch of dirt. They kept digging
until they decided they had no chance of finding any treasure and eventually cut
their losses and moved on. The money pit was never touched again for the next 8
years.
